• AceTax

AceTax is a tax software that has an online version and one for downloading (windows only).  AceTax has been created to display only fields that are considered ‘important’ to you.  As well, during the process you can see the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) forms being filled out.

Price:  $8.99 for new users and $6.99 for returning users.  Free for users under $25,000.00. See all pricing details here.

Operating System:  AceTax has two versions: download and online.   The downloadable version is only available for Windows where as the Online Version is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux.

Usability:  The software is surprisingly easy to use, but does require a bit of knowledge on what forms you are inputting.

    Support: No support

Ability to find deductions:  No deduction prompts

Bells and Whistles:  No bells and whistles

Overall:  AceTax is a great software for those who have an idea of what they’re doing.  Even if you don’t you can probably still make along fine with the software.  My only concern would be a user might miss deductions that they might not be aware of.  However, AceTax is definitely good for simple tax returns.

After entering your basic information you’re presented with a screen where you must select all your eligible forms. This is ok if you have an idea what you’re doing tax-wise. However, I think most people will find this screen a bit challenging as it provides too many options all at once. A general comment is that I could see people having problems determining how to save their data (ie: it’s not intuitive). I personally ran into a glitch trying to figure out what went wrong when I entered incorrect information. Eventually I determined that there is small red-words to find. However, I think it should be slightly more clear, ie: the field highlighted in red.

    Advantages of AceTax

    • Online – No Software to Download (unless you want to with Windows)
    • 100% Canadian
    • Prepare Up To 20 Returns (Different Pricing Scheme Depending on Number of Returns)
    • FREE when Total Family income less than $25,000.00 (same with TurboTax and other software)
    • Can delete information from the AceTax system when your tax return is complete.

    Disadvantages of AceTax

    • No RRSP Optimizer
    • Could be a bit challenging to use for some users.

    AceTax Pricing

For new users ($8.99) and $6.99 for returning users with discounts for multiple returns.  See all pricing details here.

Finally, this software looks good and is fairly inexpensive.   The ability to delete your tax file is an added bonus for anyone who doesn’t like their personal information stored on a companies server but can cause problems the following tax year.

I downloaded Ace Tax 2011 and ran it successfully up to the point where I had to save the licence after paying for it. It will not save to my Mac even though it is supposed to be Mac compatible. If I can’t use a Mac for this software it should not be advertised as compatible

Hi Doug, Thanks for the comment. I’ll take a look into this in the next little bit to ensure that it is Mac compatible. From their website it looks like all the right Mac files are present so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

I also downloaded AceTax on my Mac as it said it was Mac compatible. I had filled everything in. Then I tried to save it and it wouldn’t. I lost all my info. Some of the pages are hard to follow too as there is no help offered. Last year when I had a PC I used Studio Tax and for someone doing their taxes on their own it was the easiest and most resourceful software. I loved it. But since my PC crashed I got a Mac and unfortunately Studio Tax is not comapatible with Mac (hopefully in the near future). Now I’m looking for another easy software. I’m gonna have to keep reading reviews and hopefully I’ll find a good one.

I downloaded Ace on my Mac (looked like it was compatible) and everything looked ok. However, right from the start there were mysterious glitches. Entering a second T4 (using + T4 function) an entering info on second T4 basically overwrote the first T4 I had entered. I went over this several times thinking it was something I was doing something wrong, but eventually came to realization that the software is either buggy or not compatible with MAC. Send message the Ace support, but no response yet.

Used QuickTax and TurboTax for years on a PC-no problems. Can’t find the “licence key ” or “install licence button”!! Reverted to pencil and paper to complete my return. Not compatible with my iMac. One unsatisfied customer!!!

Tried my best. Doesn’t work on a MAC. I guess I’ll have to buy a PC.

I also had trouble with it not recognizing my second T4 form and It’s super frustrating to have to find a different program and start over. I used this software with no problem last year. This year AceTax is a Pain!

I downloaded AceTax for Mac, Installed it no problem, Entered everything, Printed it, then checked it against my rough working copy before filing it. I noticed a Miscalculation on one of the forms so I went back and entered 2 other random sets of numbers and each time it would calculate the result incorrectly. I sent AceTax a comment explaining the problem in detail. The reply I got was very snotty saying “The only reason you would not have that working is if there were any wrong entries made. CRA has tested AceTax and everything works as they should”
Obviously they didn’t even bother checking the software or they would have seen the same miscalculation. I’ll use something else to do my taxes.
